The Department

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, established in 1967, commenced its academic activities on November 2, 1977. As one of the oldest and most esteemed departments in the region, it has built a rich legacy of excellence over the years. From its inception, the department's primary objective has been to enhance students' academic and technical knowledge through cutting-edge technologies, innovative teaching-learning methods, and robust research initiatives. Throughout its illustrious journey, the department has consistently adapted to technological advancements and sustainability trends in mechanical engineering, supported by a dedicated faculty comprising highly qualified and experienced professionals across all specializations. The department’s curriculum undergoes regular updates with active input from industry experts, alumni, research organizations, and other key stakeholders. Both its UG and PG programs are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). Programs offered include B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering (4 years) and M.Tech. programs (2 years) in Thermal Engineering, Design and Manufacturing, CAD CAM and Automation, Materials and Manufacturing Technology, and Renewable Energy. The department also offers PhD degrees in various specialized fields of Mechanical Engineering. With its commitment to academic rigor, research excellence, and industry relevance, the department continues to shape the next generation of innovators and leaders in mechanical engineering.

    Places to visit Near Silchar

    Maibong

    Located at a distance of about 137 kilometers from Silchar, Maibong is a popular hill station situated on the banks of the Mahur River. Maibong served as the capital when the town was ruled by the Kachari kingdom. The palace here is known for its scenic landscapes, splendid architecture, carvings and scriptures of a bygone era.

    Hajo

    Hajo is a town on the banks of the Brahmaputra and is a prominent pilgrimage center for tourists across the country. The town houses pilgrimage sites from three major religions- Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism.

    Umrangshu

    Nestled between the borders of Assam and Meghalaya, lies the pristine hill station Umrangshu. A famous tourist destination, this hill station provides a mesmerizing view of the valley with the splendid North Cachar Hills as its backdrop.

    Haflong

    Belonging to the Dima Hasao district, Haflong is the a hill station of Assam. It is a picturesque hill station that is surrounded by numerous beautiful lakes, streams, waterfalls and lush vibrant forests. Haflong is a dream destination for nature lovers and camping enthusiasts. At an altitude of more than 600 meters above sea level, it is an ideal getaway for a serene vacation.

    Unakoti

    Unakoti Hill, located in the northeastern state of Tripura, India, is an enigmatic historical site featuring colossal rock carvings, murals, and waterfalls. 'Unakoti' translates to 'one less than a crore' in Bengali, signifying the legend that says these are carvings of one less than 10 million gods and goddesses. An ancient pilgrimage site, it beautifully showcases the blend of natural and manmade artistry.

    Kachari Fort

    Kachari Fort which is considered to be one of the magnificent forts to be visited in this area and tourists come here to see the remains of this kingdom at Khaspur which makes the place more interesting. It reflects the rich cultural heritage of the ancient era through the fine quality of work done by the engineers of those times. The fort is covered on all sides by the lush greenery which makes the place picturesque.
